FUNRAISING DATES
Andy has arranged for SHS tennis teams to participate in a fundraiser to benefit both the boys and girls tennis teams. The SHS Athletic Department offers opportunities to its sports teams to clean the SHS stadium after sporting events. The dates offered to the SHS tennis teams are:
8/30 @ 10:00 a.m. Thank you to the boys Varsity for a job well done!
9/26 - following the scheduled SHS Homecoming football game
10/18 - 2:00 p.m.
10/25 - 2:00 p.m.
The teams will earn $100 for each cleaning. Mr. White, the SHS Athletic Director, has told us it should take 15 or so people, 30 minutes to clean out the Football Stadium.
Please look at the dates and if one or more work for you please e-mail me at kmba2@hotmail.com so that I am sure we have enough volunteers for each date. If we have more people than we need then it will take half as long! The 9/26 game will probably require the most help. It would be great if every player who attends the game stays to collect a bag before they leave the stadium.
I will be at the north end of the stands with a garbage bag for all volunteers. Having done this before I might suggest that if you don’t like dirty hands that you bring a pair of gardening gloves. Friends and family are more than welcome to join us!
Go Hornets!!

Thursday, we will have photos taken by Tom Mac at the courts at the beginning of practice. PLease wear your Hornet Tennis tee shirt and navy shorts for the photo. If you have not gotten yours yet, wear a white shirt with not a lot of writing on it.

* We will have to find time to play Dexter ( which was rained out) and I'd also like to play pioneer, but it is not on the schedule currently.
update
For now, I want to say how proud I am of all the guys yesterday. They played their hearts out, and the were good sportsmen all around.
As for those of you who didn't know about the match, don't worry about it. I couldn't post anything on the blog because I didn't have comcast for a few days. My nieghbor had cable installed and they unplugged mine by accident. Obviously, it was was fixed and I have access once again! I did tell the guys about the matches . I sat them down ( literally I made them sit down on the wall on the lower courts and pay attention.) I went over the schedule for the entire week with them and they all nodded in agreement. Now, I didn't get the chance to remind them on Tuesday and I realize they are teenagers who need to be told several times, but they are also young men and should be listening when I make important announcements.
Thank you. Now, I have told the guys this announcement several times, too, the guys need to bring in 5 dollars for their shirt today. Andy said he was going to pick them up today. I don' t know why they were delayed. No money, no shirt.
If your student has not paid -to-participate, they will not be allowed to practice today or again until it is paid.

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!
On Tuesday, practice is from 3-5pm. Wednesday we are playing Dexter, should they have enough players for a JV team. I am still waiting to hear back to hear if it will be home or if we will be going with the varsity. I will let you know as soon as I know. :) UPDATE- We will be going to Dexter, but not everyone because Dexter has a very small team. Andy is waiting to hear back from the Dexter coach.
My phone is dead, and currently the only way to reach me is at katfoleyphoto@yahoo.com . I will be be checking my email later this evening around 8:30-9pm.
Hope you had a great weekend , hope you were able to play some tennis, too!

Pay to participate
These players need to contact the althletic office before they will be allowed to play on Tuesday. These players will be able to do our run tomorrow morning from 9-10 ( we might be done a little earlier. ) Dont' forget your 5 dollars for your shirt tomorrow morning. Remember if I cancel practice I will do it at 8:30am. If you don't see a post here at 8:30 am, then assume we have practice.

Men's JV Tennis 2008
EMAIL your email address to parent volunteer sandy fike at fike.sandy@comcast.net
Thank you for your support of the Saline Tennis Program. Your involvement is imperative to the success of your sons as well as of this program.
I will do the best I can to keep this blog updated with information you will need to know ( I realize teenage boys are not always the best at passing along information. )
1. Schedule.. I am still soldifying our schedule for this season.. for now that information is listed on SalineHornets.com-- but you must look at both varsity and JV schedules. The only tournament for JV is on September 20 ( and it is here at the Saline Courts. )
2. Practice..
This week 9-11am, except on Wednesday when I will need everyone here at 2:30pm to go to Chelsea. Once school starts it will be from 3-5 . I will let you know if that has to change due to my own work schedule.
3. Contact me.. I am giving everyone my business magnet ( not intended to be a shameless plug ) but all my pertient contact information is on that magnet including email and phone. My business phone is my only phone . I only answer it during business hours Tues-Fri - 9-5, otherwise I end up talking business all day long without a reprieve. But I do check it often and when I get a message I will call you back if you leave your number. I will not call back after 8:30pm. My email I check almost daily and usually at 6:30 am .
4. Parents--- I need your email addresses. We have a wonderful parent or several who have volunteered their time to organize snacks and rides, etc. I , however, forgot to get that email address yesterday , now I forgot which wonderful parent it was! ( I was trying to connect parents with sons yesterday . ) So , if it was you, please email me your information and I'll post your email here ( if that is ok) so parents can email you their address directly.
5. About me.. I have been teaching tennis since I was a freshman in high school in 1992. I played varsity tennis all four years of high school, and won regionals at 2nd singles. ( I am horrible now, but I still know what I am talking about . ) I didn't play in college , except intermural , because I had a major that didn't allow that kind of time and I went abroad.
I have been coaching Saline Women's JV tennis for five years, and this is my first year coaching the men's season. I grew up around the men's program, I have three older brothers, and I am very comfortable coaching these young men.
Thanks SO MUCH!
GO HORNETS!

PARTY AND MAY 3rd
WE WILL NOT BE IN THE MAY 3RD TOURNAMENT. I realize this comes as a huge relief to many who were dealing with prom, and it is disappointing for those who would like a chance to play. It was not on our original schedule and there were too many conflicts with that date. Enjoy your day , ladies.
The tee shirt party was a total success... I can't thank Sarah Fosdick and her family enough for their extreme generosity in organizing the party and opening up their lovely home for us to create the shirts. it was a lot of fun for everyone, it was great seeing all of you in all of your creative glory!
For those of you who heard about my art project for W4 Country, thanks for your support, I WON!! I won Kenny Chesney tickets and I will be giving them as a gift for a friend who is a big Kenny fan. You can see the artwork on W4Country.com , it will be posted later today. Thank you to Robyn Chaffee for allowing me to use one of her senior pictures in my project.
here are some party pics!

CHANGE IN SCHEDULE
I have also canceled our port huron match. The varsity is still going, but we wouldn't make it back until late ( like the utica match) because we'd have to play after them.
May 3rd's tournament is still up in the air. Ladies going to prom , book your appointments. Enjoy your day. I have decided, if we do play in it, it will not be mandatory to be at the match if you are not playing. It would be nice if you showed up for part of it and showed your support, but it will not be mandatory.

COMPETITIVE TEAM
Not to be like pioneer or huron , but our team is a huge program like theirs , so I have to do this. ..
IF YOU HAVE AN ISSUE with where you are placed I'd ask you come directly to me, via email or in person and do not discuss it with everyone else on the team. It brings morale down when there is negative rumors /misgivings running rampant. Our team is a positive one, we love and support one another, and the decision of the coach, even if you don't agree. It is ok to disagree with my decisions, it is not ok to talk about your teammates faults or my decisions behind my/their back(s).
COMPETITIVE A TEAM – this line up is NOT set

The competitive B Team , is a practicing team but may get to see more play when teams are bigger or I feel it is best to change out a player on the A team for any reason, attitude, work ethic, injury, morale.

MONDAY 'S MATCH
I will look up directions and post the line up on sunday .
hope you guys had a great weekend.
UPCOMING EVENTS
MAY 3
There is an Ann Arbor Invitiational that has seven other great teams. They will be using our courts, therefore it will be mandatory for all of you to be there. If you decide not to play because of prom that is fine, there are plenty of girls not going to prom who will love the chance to play. Even if you aren't playing, you will be required to be there until at least 2:30 pm. The head tournament director estimated play will be done at 3:30 but there is no guarantee. If you are going to prom and can not commit to be there ( mentally and physically ) I want to know so I can put someone else in your place.

friday
I have delayed posting the line up , because if it doesn't rain, I want to see how people play in order to best choose for tournament. If you were scheduled to play in the brighton match, it doesn't mean you are guaranteed a spot on saturday, but it does mean it is mandatory that you are there on sat. ( sonja, i know you can't ... good luck on the ACT . ) so you can plan to be there.
you will need to be at the high school to leave from the high school at 6:45am on Sat. Yes, I know it is early... but this will allow ample time to get to the high school and make sure you are all there and accounted for... not 6:47 or 6:55... 6:45. There are 28 girls who would love to have your spot on the team, so you must be on time or you are disrespecting your team mates and Mr. Webb who has sacrificed his saturday to coach.
I know it is a pain. I still have not heard from Troy high school.. please check this blog tomorrow night or call me , because you might have to leave even earlier.
Practice tomorrow is mandatory at 4:30. if it is raining , go inside and we will walk/run the track or do the stairs. If it is raining , practice will be from 4:30-5:30.
OTHER STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW...
1. if you have to pay the play to participate , do it immediately, please. If you have questions, or concerns , ask the althetic office.
2. uniforms... i don't know when they are coming , hopefully the end of next week, but i am not sure.
shirts -35 , skirts -45 make checks payable to "Saline Sports Shack" DUE MONDAY.
3. hoodies and sweats - Hoodies $20 , Sweats $14. I will find out who to write the checks to, I believe it will be "underground shirts, " but don't write that check until I find out for sure. DUE MONDAY.
( If cost is an issue , please come to me and I'll see what I can do . )
4. I am proud of you and I want you to know that.
YOU GUYS RULE!

HAPPY SPRING BREAK!
I have very limited access to internet/phone until i get home . ( I snuck out to Panera to do this blog )
Monday- 4:30-6:30, Mr Webb and our captains will be running practice. I want all the girls who are playing in tuesday's match to play matches. I don't really care who you play against or with for this practice, I just you to all play some matches. on the remaining courts, I want you to practice serving!!! When the matches start to finish up ( 8 game pro-sets ) then play champs and challengers. you can end practice but playing a game of the captain's choosing.
Tuesday.. we are home against country day ( 4:30 ) is when the match officially starts. However. I want all of you dressed and ready to go by 3:15. If you don't have a uniform , please wear something that says Saline on it, and try to dress in school colors. Everyone , even if you are not going to play, is required to be here for the entire match. Bring homework and your good cheering voices for your teammates.
SPEAKING OF TUESDAY.
Here are the 12 ladies that will be playing ( DO NOT FREAK OUT IF YOU ARE NOT ON THE LIST . I have MANY girls who are capable of playing , this doesn't mean you are not on the competitive team for sure. )
i will post the line up , if i can when i get back on monday night, but if it isn't up by 9:30 pm that means it isn't going to be up and you will find out at 3:15 pm on Tuesday. you'll have an hour before the match to hit around with your new partners.
These are in no particular order...
1. Megan Anthony
2. Stephanie Webb
3. Robyn Chaffee
4. Bryn Walters
5. Chelsea Norman
6. Chelsea Molloy
7. Anjali Saripalli
8. Sonja Karnovsky
9. Kaitlyn Sheets
10. Haley Breedveld
11. Lauren Eisemann
12. Sarah Fosdick
One alternate ( Brittany Louth - be ready just in case )
Now, that being said, Country Day has not contacted me and there is a good chance they have more than 12 players... so I want everyone to bring their rackets and WATER!
ALL OF YOU RULE. ALL OF YOU MAKE ME PROUD!

I will post the line up for just the one meet.. ( not necessarily for the competitive team, but just for the first meet. ) I will post it before Monday's practice which Mr . Webb and the three captains will be leading. that practice will be from 4:30-6:30.
great job everyone so far!
coach
the votes are in....
we have one captain .... Sarah Fosdick.
We have a tie for the second captain position....
Robyn Chaffee and Lauren Eisenmann. ( I apologize if I am still spelling Lauren's last name wrong.)
I swore I'd only have two captains this year so I am really struggling with this. However, being as though we have such a large team, and I truly believe these three ladies can work cohesively ,
We will have three captains this year. I am confident in my decision to have all three ladies lead this team .
I want to assure you that I do feel any of the girls who tried to become a captain would have been excellent, and we have many leaders on this team and for that, I am truly grateful.
Congrats Sarah, Robyn, and Lauren, you will be great captains.
I am proud of all of you!

RAIN RAIN GO AWAY
varsity is practicing at liberty school , but we are not.
tomorrow i will let you know if we are having practice , but if it is raining , i am guessing we won't.
i H I G H LY recommend you work out on days that we don't have practice. go to the rec center, do a video something. we do our best to make sure we have alternate places so that we don't have to cancel, but if we have to cancel, take it upon yourselves to keep in shape.
put these in your calendar...
fundraising-- noodles and company ( on washtenaw ) on wednesday , the 26th. i will have an informational sheet for you explaining how it will work .
uniforms- we are using the same uniforms as last year. if you already have one, you are set! if you are new to tennis , i will be asking for a shirt and skirt size and will have prices for you .
as for optional sweats and sweatshirts ( and any tee shirts ) we will be figuring that out within the week and I will keep you posted.
RAIN PLACES next week
if it rains next week,
Monday and Tuesday
we will be at Liberty school at 7:30. If not we will have the same schedule as we did this week, which is posted on this blog. since i have not had ample chance to see you play I can 't make my decision to break you into separate groups just yet.
THANK YOU!
thanks to all of you for working so hard in the freezing cold! i am proud of you!
See you tomorrow!

UPDATE FOR FRIDAY MAR 21
coach
Thursday, March 13, 2008
two jv teams
Those of you joining the JV team, we begin our tryouts next week. I will take into consideration those who are still at varsity level and will be joining us after the final cut.
The JV team consists of two teams... one is the competitive team, that will be playing in most of the matches , just like varsity with a strict line up 1-4 singles , 1-4 doubles. Then there will be a practicing team, one that will work on strokes and playing matches against each other and the competitive team to gain valuable experience. Try not to get upset if you are not selected for the competitive team... because as many of the girls will tell you, we have fun no matter what!
I will begin to have separate practices , but will also have combined practices ,too. I am only one person... and there are a lot of you so I have to make two teams so that I can be a better coach to all of you.
Now, this is the tough part.... I have to tell you that just because you played on the competitive team last year will not save your spot this year. There is a lot of talent that is new to the team and I will choose who I believe will perform well in the allocated spots on the competitive team.
I will be looking closely at your strokes , attitude, and your work ethic to see where you will best be suited for yourself and the team.
A WORD ABOUT ATTENDANCE....
1. You chose to be a part of a T E A M. that means attendance is mandatory. ( the exception to this is this first week march 10-14, when we've had to change plans last minute. ) If you have a school sponsored event ( DECA , etc ) then you need to let me know in advance when you will not be here .
2. For every practice missed, you miss one competition. This should have started this week, but I am starting it next week because of the irregularity in the schedule this past week. If you are in a club sport, school sports come first. If you are not on the competitive team, then clearly I can't make you sit out of a competition but I will occasionally need to bring people up from the practice team, and your attendance will play a large role in that decision.
3. If you are sick, of course I understand, but the rules are the same.
THE LINE UP for the competitive team...
I will make my decisions hopefully by next Friday, but may need a few more days. I will have a sheet on Monday that tells me your singles/doubles preference and your doubles partner preference, but this is not a guarantee that you will get your preferences. Please know that I have been doing this a long time and I know what I am doing and I will do what is best for the team and for you, in that order.
PARTY ON!
We will have a team ( VARSITY AND JV) party soon , and we will elect captains on Friday, March 21. You must be a junior or senior to be a captain. You will give speeches (2min approx) on Friday. There will be two captains. If there is a tie, we will re-vote to break the tie on Monday. I think three captains is too much.
I NEED YOUR HELP, PLEASE! APRIL 12, 2008.
As many of you know , I am a photographer and I have a wedding to shoot April 12. ( I booked it way before I knew we'd be playing in the Spring. ) The competitive team has a invitational in Troy. I need a parent or two who knows tennis to "play coach" on that date , so we don't have to back out of the invitational. Please let me know as soon as possible.
T H A N K Y O U !!
I have admired your commitment thus far and I am looking forward to a great year.
My email is katfoleyphoto@yahoo.com, you may reach me there, and only there ( don't contact me through myspace or facebook. Thank you . ) I try to check it daily because it is my work email, but I don't always get the chance.. so if there is something urgent, 734.904.0070.

HERE WE GO! Spring 2008
This is where I will update you on past, present and upcoming events. This first week there is still snow on the ground and you have all been troupers ( all 50 of you ). I didn't bring a camera to the first practice , but that will change.
This first week is tryouts, specifically varsity tryouts. Next week, I will begin sifting through the 36 remaining girls.
Here is the way our practice schedule goes..
Next week..March 17-21
Monday 4:30-6:30
Tuesday 4:30-6:30
Wednesday 5-7
Thursday 4:30-6:30
Friday 5-6:30
I needed the later times so that I can have enough carts of tennis balls and court space to fit everyone! Thank you ladies for your commitment to the team. I am looking forward to meeting all of you and helping you to learn to love this sport as much as I do!
